Tips for maximum availability during winter
1 December 2019
Breakdowns are often caused by just a few potential problems. We highlight a list of a few preventative tips. You may use it as a checklist to ascertain maximum availability of your truck.
Tip 1:
Use special antifreeze for air brakes
That’s how you avoid freezing and corroding, and you improve lubrication of the valves.
Tip 2:
Check the engine compartment
Extra attention points: wiring, hoses, radiator, coolant with anti-freeze and the oil level.
Tip 3:
Check your lighting
Before departure check all lamps and make sure to have spare lamps on board.
Tip 4:
Check your park heater performance
Pay attention to the parking heater, especially in the winter.
Tip 5:
Check the electrical system
Think of the alternator, starter and battery and inspect the wiring. Snow and ice tend to stick to loose, bare or free-hanging wires.
Tip 6:
Check the fuel system
It is crucial that no melting water ends up in the system. Making sure of this prevents obstruction of the fuel system.
Tip 7:
Wash the outside of your truck
This diminishes the impact of dirt and damage by road salt.
Tip 8:
Don't forget yourself
Make sure that you have a sufficient stock of non-perishable food and water and think of important things such as blankets and a first-aid kit.
Tip 9:
Check your truck [regularly]
Walk around your truck and trailer to look at possible damaged or worn out parts before departing.
Tip 10:
Inspect your wiper blades
Clear the wiper blades of snow and ice before departing - this prevents wear and damage and keeps your view of the road clear.
Tip 11:
Don't forget your starter cables
Low temperatures and the use of cabin accessories take a lot of energy from your battery. Should it be too low at some point, the starter cables will make it function properly again.
